Encounter is an early netart project inspired by the burgeoning beginnings of online relationships and dating in the 1990’s. The project documents the daily online communication over a period of 30 day, between two strangers ‘anon1’ and ‘anon2’; the artist and digital curator Chris Byrne. From March 20th - April 18th 1998, this daily private conversation was uploaded to a public website. IRC chats were held weekly, which enabled audiences to participate in the conversation. The project culminated in a public dinner in Lancaster, where the artist, anon2, and members of the online audience met. The event was live streamed via IRC.
The project was commission as part of the online residencies "My House & Your House" hosted by Furnace, Lancaster.
