an Exercise in Solitude was filmed on an iPhone XR, while walking in the wilds of Scotland during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The work poetically weaves together personal narrative about walking in solitude, with writing and thinking around walking, nature, resources, technofeminism, and AI, as a means to calm, quieten, and reconsider the enveloping noise of digital and social culture.
The work is a film walk, navigating the material implications of the technological devices close at hand. Journeying through the landscape, through thoughts, experiencing the tensions between the natural world, our embodied existence, and digital technologies. It is a mediation, a quiet provocation to consider the implications of finite material resources, and what it means to be resourceful in the 21st century.
“Solitude – A means to be alone, fully alone. A different kind of escape.”
